Social Media Policy

The City of Seminole’s social media forums are limited public forums created for the purpose of providing updated information and sharing opinions regarding city-related events and programs.

While the City welcomes and encourages dialogue with the public, any content maintained in a social media format that is related to City business, including a list of subscribers and posted communication, is a public record and is subject to the State of Oklahoma open records laws. Please be advised that if you post materials, you participate at your own risk, taking personal responsibility for your comments and any information provided.

We encourage your comments on the City of Seminole’s various social media outlets, and we hope you will join the discussions. We do not allow comments that are off-topic, and we expect a basic level of civility. Disagreements are fine, but mutual respect is a must, and profanity or abusive language are out of bounds.

By posting comments on the City-sponsored outlets, you give the City the irrevocable right to reproduce, distribute, publish, display, edit, modify, create derivative works from, and otherwise use your submission for any purpose in any form and on any media. You also agree that you will not:

  1. Post material that infringes on the rights of any third party, including intellectual property, privacy or publicity rights.

  2. Post material that is unlawful, obscene, defamatory, threatening, harassing, abusive, slanderous, offensive, hateful, or embarrassing to any other person or entity as determined by the City of Seminole in its discretion.

  3. Content that fosters, or perpetrates discrimination on the basis of race, creed, color, age, religion, gender, national origin, marital status, physical or mental disability, or sexual orientation

  4. Content that directly promotes or advocates violence or the threat of violence

  5. Content or comments that compromise the safety or security of the public or public systems

  6. Confidential or non-public information

  7. Content that contains personal attacks of any kind

  8. Post chain letters or pyramid schemes

  9. Post advertisements or solicitations of business.

  10. Impersonate another person

  11. Allow any other person or entity to use your identification for posting or viewing comments

  12. Post the same note more than once or ‘spam’ social media outlets. ‘Spam’ includes multiple responses on a single post from a single person that may be different, but is identical in content.

The City of Seminole reserves the right (but is not obligated) to do any or all of the following:

  1. Remove communications that are abusive, illegal or disruptive, or that otherwise fail to conform with these terms and conditions

  2. Terminate a user’s access to the City’s social media platforms upon any breach of these terms and conditions

  3. Edit or delete any communications posted on social media, regardless of whether such communications violate these standards

  4. Ban a user for 10, 30, 60 days, or indefinitely for multiple breaches of these terms

Blocked or banned users may appeal in writing to the City Manager. Upon receipt of the appeal, the City Manager will then have up to ten (10) working days to issue a decision. The City Manager’s decision is final. The decision to restrict or remove any content deemed in violation of this policy or any applicable law is not appealable.

Finally, you agree to indemnify the City of Seminole against any damages, losses, liabilities, judgments, costs or expenses (including reasonable attorneys’ fees and costs) arising out of a claim by a third party relating to any material you have posted.
